Royal Exchange Area Guide
The Royal Exchange was founded in London within the 16th century by the merchant Thomas Gresham to become a centre of commerce for the whole of London. The Royal Exchange has been destroyed by fire twice and the present building was designed by William Tite in the 1840’s. The site was famously occupied by the Lloyd’s insurance market for nearly 150 years and today the Royal Exchange comprises mostly of offices, elite shops and restaurants.
During the 20th century, the Royal Exchange briefly returned to its use as a centre for financial trading, when it was home to the London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE). However the financial institutions have moved away to surrounding areas within the City of London and the Royal Exchange is now an upmarket retail centre.
The reconstruction of the courtyard created brand new boutiques and restaurants to add to the other retailers, occupying the Royal Exchange. The shops in the Royal Exchange include Boodles, Hermès, Georg Jensen and Tiffany & Co.
